PM Modi’s channel has garnered a total of 4.5 billion video views, maintaining a consistent quality of videos and upload frequency throughout the years.

On Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s personal YouTube channel surpassed 20 million subscribers, making him the sole world leader with this distinction and leaving his counterparts far behind. Officials highlight that Modi’s videos on the channel have amassed over 4.5 billion views, a significant lead over global peers.

Former Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro trails in second place with around 6.4 million subscribers, less than a third of Modi’s count. In terms of views, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is second to Modi with 224 million, a fraction of Modi’s viewership.

US President Joe Biden has 789,000 subscribers, while Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has 316,000. ‘Yoga with Modi,’ another YouTube channel linked to the prime minister, boasts over 73,000 subscribers.

Among other Indian leaders, former Congress chief Rahul Gandhi’s channel has more than 3.5 million subscribers, just over a sixth of Modi’s following. Modi initiated his YouTube channel in 2007 during his tenure as Gujarat chief minister, showcasing his early recognition of the potential of social media in political communication. His success in leveraging it is widely acknowledged.

In August of this year, the channel achieved a fivefold increase in subscribers. The subsequent month saw Mr. Modi virtually participating in the YouTube Fanfest India event. (“Please subscribe to my channel, and to receive updates, do press the bell icon,” he mentioned towards the end of his message.)

Currently, Mr. Modi holds the record for having more subscribers than any other world leader. This unique circumstance can be attributed to India’s rapid digitization in recent years, coupled with its status as the world’s most populous country (pending the next census). Notably, China, the second-most populous country, lacks access to YouTube. Furthermore, in the two-party-dominated United States, most presidents have rarely achieved approval ratings comparable to Mr. Modi’s during peacetime.

His widespread influence in the digital realm is a key factor in his worldwide appeal. According to a recent survey conducted by Morning Consult, the results of which were released earlier this month, PM Modi maintains the top spot in global leadership approval, boasting an impressive 76 percent rating.

In the survey’s ‘Global Leader Approval Rating Tracker,’ it was found that within India, 76 percent of respondents expressed approval for PM Modi’s leadership, while 18 percent held a contrary opinion, and six percent abstained from providing feedback.
