Kokborok Day 2024

Kokborok Day 2024: Tripuri Language Day, also known as Kokborok Day, is a vibrant celebration on January 19 of each year that honors the formal recognition of Kokborok as an official language in Tripura. The significance of this special day lies in the fact that it commemorates the formal recognition of Kokborok as an official language in Tripura back in 1979. A vibrant mix of literary activities and cultural programs are held to mark the occasion, which brings people together to celebrate and honor the richness of their language and heritage.

Kokborok, also referred to as Tripuri, is the ancient native language of the Tripuri community in Tripura that has been spoken for thousands of years. It has its roots in the rich history of North East India and was formerly known as Tiprakok or Tripurikok. Kokborok is a member of the Tibeto-Burman language family and is spoken throughout the northeastern part of India, specifically in Tripura and the Chittagong Hill Tracts of Bangladesh. It is one of the rapidly expanding Tibeto-Burman languages in the area. Those who speak Kokborok are referred to as “Tripuris.”

The Tripura Kings’ historical chronicles, which span more than two millennia, refer to “Koloma” as the Kokborok script. While there is ongoing debate about this script, efforts are being made to bring it back to life; currently, many people prefer writing Kokborok in Latin. Government and non-government organizations, like “Kokborok tei Hukumu Mission,” are committed to promoting Kokborok language, art, literature, and cultural expressions. Notably, Kokborok is now taught in Tripura’s government schools, colleges, and universities—a significant accomplishment for the Tripuri community. Continued efforts are made to improve and incorporate the language into mainstream discourse.

Unfortunately, more frequently spoken languages are displacing numerous indigenous languages and dialects in India. For the Tripuri people, Kokborok Day is a sad reminder of how important it is to preserve their own culture and language. It promotes a group effort to make sure Kokborok survives rather than going extinct. On this day, people get the chance to reaffirm their commitment to preserving Kokborok’s rich history and to the idea that no effort should be overlooked in preserving this essential component of their cultural legacy.
